Submitted by: Allen F. Armstrong

The 106th Cavalry, National Guard. The man on top is unknown. The man at left, supporting the man on top, is Mel Root who was a well known restauranteur in Urbana. Mel Root's Cafe closed sometime in the late 60's or early 70's after many years in business. The rest of the men are unidentified except for lower right - John Homfeld of Urbana who eventually became a Major General and Commander of the 33rd Division of the Guard.
1928 Champaign High School production of "Smilin' Through." Far right - Frederick M. Armstrong and unknown actress.

Jesse Wilkinson - Photographer in Champaign (born 1812 in Avon, Livingston County, New York; died 22 Oct 1877 in Champaign, Champaign County, Illinois)

Horace Ballard Wilkinson, son of Jesse Wilkinson. He was mustered in on 7 Sep 1861 and served in Company B of the 17th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and was later transferred to Company I of the 8th Illinois Volunteer Infanatry. I found a Mary E. Haines living in Homer in the 1880 census, and a lady by the same name married to Bruce Conkey of Homer. Just to clarify, I am not interested in parting with the original photo.
