Early Doctors and Illness

"The earliest physician was Dr. Fulkerson, who arrived in 1830. The next thought to have been Dr. James H. Lyon, who was a public-spirited and valuable citizen. He represented the county in the legislature one term. The diseases were of the malarial kind. The settlers suffered greatly from the ague, and in the early summer and fall but little work was done. A healthy person was the exception. With the settlement and cultivation of the land this scourge was brought under control."
