Sperling Family

Frederick and August Sperling the sons of Godfrey and Christina(Baller) came to this country in 1850. They settled with their parents in Janesville WI. After serving in the Civil War with the WI volleenters they married and moved to East Bend Township where they purchased a tract of land in 1886. They were farmers and also owned and operated a grainery in Dewey. August was well known for his beekeeping, he was also the tax acesser for Dewey for severall years. All of their children were born here and some are buried at Beekman Cemetery. The brothers eventually relocated to California, where they are buried. They still have many descendants in the Champaign area. Some of their surnames besides Sperling, are Harry, Jones(Dewey State Bank), Heyer, McMahon.
