JACOB CULVER, M. D. - Dr. Culver, for number of years a resident practitioner of Mahomet, was born in Butler county, Ohio, and is the fourth child of Jacob and Elizabeth (CORNELISON) CULVER. His parents were natives of New Jersey. His father's family was of English descent, and emigrated to this country in the early colonial days. His grandfather Daniel CULVER serving in both the Revolutionary and war of 1812. His mother's family was of French extraction, they too coming to this country at an early day. His maternal grandfather, Andrew J. CORNELISON, also took part in both wars against Great Britain. Truly a most honorable family record, and one its descendants should be proud of and transmit it as they have heretofore, unsullied. And should another attempt ever be made to subvert or destroy our constitution, it is safe to say the same patriotic blood that coursed through the veins of those Revolutionary heroes, would stimulate their descendants to similar deeds of valor and sacrifice. Dr. Culver's early life was passed principally in Indiana, to which state his parents removed when he was about three years of age, and where his father still continues to reside. His mother died April 15th, 1857. During his youth he met with an accident by which he was severely hurt and temporarily crippled, and which prevented his engaging in any active pursuits. Being of a studious nature he proceeded to devote all of his time to scholastic duties. In 1853 he commenced the study of medicine under Dr. Franklin Carter, in Frankfort, Indiana, who was a graduate of Columbia College, New York, an institution deservedly ranking as first in this country. He remained three years with Dr. Carter when he attended a course of lectures at Rush Medical College. He then went to Jefferson, Indiana, where he remained eighteen months under his brother-in-law, J. S. McCLELLAN, a prominent physician and politician. Dr. Culver first practiced at Clark's Hill, Indiana, thence he removed to his present location in Mahomet in 1858. He married, October 27th, 1857, Miss Phoebe J. HORNEY, who was born in Indiana. Her parents were natives of Virginia, and removed to Pennsylvania and thence to Ohio. They have had four children, three of whom died in infancy, and the last, Wm. D., died when eleven years of age of hip disease. Dr. Culver is a most active and energetic citizen. To his profession he has devoted constant and arduous study, and is in consequence a successful practitioner. His character is without spot or blemish, and his social qualities are productive of almost as much good as his professional skill. He is mentioned as one of Mahomet's best and most useful citizens.
