CHARLES E. SCHOFF. The son of Abijah and Amy SCHOFF, was born in Ionia county, Michigan, June 10, 1838. His father was of German descent, and his mother of English. His grandfather was one of the earliest settlers of Vermont, and fought in the Revolutionary war. Abijah Schoff, father of our subject, was an officer in the war of 1812.

Mr. Charles E. Schoff, of whom we write, lived until nine years of age on a farm, at which time his parents moved to the village of Portland, Mich., where his father died in 1847.

He attended Ann Arbor University. Two of his brothers also graduated from that institution. In 1852, Mr. Schoff, entered the office of the Washtenaw Whig, in the city of Ann Arbor. His brother, S. S. SCHOFF, was then editor and proprietor of the paper, and is now editor of the Western Manufacturer, in Chicago, Ill. For a number of years, Mr. Schoff was connected with the Kenosha, Wis., Telegraph, and subsequently engaged in the printing business in Chicago.

In 1869 he came to Champaign, and purchased the Champaign Union, in partnership with Mr. H. L. Nicolet, and assumed the editorial charge of the paper. They remained together five years. The paper is now in charge of Messrs. Schoff & Moore.

In October, 1866, he was married to Miss Gertie E. STEVENS, of St. Joseph, Mich., daughter of Eri STEVENS, one of the first settlers of the city of Kenosha, Wis., who now resides in St. Joseph, Mich. By this union they have had three children, viz., Charlie E., Llewellen H. and Ernest.

Mr. Schoff has represented his ward in the city councils for two years, and, is now the candidate on the National ticket for Clerk of the Appellate Court in the Third District.
